The Teatro Grande Foundation and the Province of Brescia, with the collaboration of the Brescia Province Events Foundation, present the eighth edition of the Il Grande in Provincia project, the summer music festival that from June 20 to September 18 will take the excellence of the Teatro Grande on a journey through the Brescia area.

The only project that has never been interrupted, not even during the period of the pandemic, Il Grande in Provincia touches historic-artistic heritage places and small villages distant from the main tourist destinations every year to contribute to the enhancement of the territory through music also with a view to cultural tourism and to meet the proximity audience.

In the year in which Brescia stands out for its rich program of activities linked to the Italian Capital of Culture, the festival Il Grande in Provincia also set itself ambitious goals, particularly that of expanding its artistic programming, also involving new municipalities that had never before this year been touched by the initiative.

This led to the definition of a calendar that consists of 23 appointments, all free of charge, starting at 9 p.m. and specific access modes for each location. The review will welcome different musical genres again this year: opera recitals, chamber music concerts, jazz, baroque music, but also some readings that combine music and word for an interesting mixture of styles.

CALENDAR 2023

All the events of The Great in the Province review are, as every year, free to attend. Access to the events varies for each municipality, so please consult teatrogrande.it and the websites of the respective administrations, also for alternative venues in case of bad weather.

We thank all the municipalities, parishes and Civil Defense Groups involved, the Mountain Communities of Valle Sabbia, Valle Trompia and Sebino Bresciano, MarteS, Padernello Castle Foundation, Ugo da Como Foundation, Terra della Franciacorta Association, Associazione Comuni delle Terre Basse, Strada del Vino e dei Sapori Colli dei Longobardi, Pro Loco di Bedizzole, Villa Franciacorta, Lombarda Marmi.

A summer of extraordinary openings awaits the Teatro Grande in this special year of Italian Capital of Culture. Beginning Tuesday, June 20, and running through Thursday, August 31, the Ridotto of the Teatro Grande, the Butterfly Room, the Teosa Room and the marvelous newly restored Statue Room will be open for free tours with free access Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Specialized staff from the Teatro Grande Foundation will be on hand to tell visitors about the history of this fascinating venue and to answer questions and curiosities, starting with the background of the debut of the opera Madama Butterfly, which will be revived next July 119 years after its first Brescian performance.

The openings will also allow visitors to admire the ceiling of the Hall of Statues, recently rediscovered at the end of the restoration campaign that ended in early 2023. The eighteenth-century coffered decoration covering the vault of the first room of the Theater building is, in fact, back on view after more than 150 years since it was covered and is now ready to enchant tourists in this special eventful year.

In the Ridotto will be set up the theater’s bookshop where it will be possible to buy books, gifts, merchandising of the Teatro Grande.

Within the opening period, two exhibitions – the themes of which will be announced soon – will be set up in the free-visit spaces, interweaving throughout the summer the exceptionality of their presence with the beauty of the historical environments and proposing new visual suggestions.

The free tours inside the Hall of Statues and the Redoubt – including the Butterfly and Teosa rooms – will be flanked from Tuesday, July 25 by a rich program of guided tours for a fee, which – after the great success recorded in the first months of the year – will be presented in a new formula, allowing the public to discover not only the Great Hall with its history, but also spaces that are little known or usually not open to the public. The tours will be in Italian, but on Tuesdays and Thursdays a round of visits will also be intended for the international public with the narration of the visitable spaces in English.

Also returning on specific dates will be the highly anticipated Grand Tour tours led by theater staff. A multi-voiced journey of discovery of the theater machine and its technical spaces, led by the workers behind the scenes and the figures who populate this fascinating world.

Residents and tourists visiting the city will thus be able to immerse themselves in the historical-artistic heritage of the Teatro Grande and rediscover one of Brescia’s most beloved places, whose history is deeply linked to that of the city itself.

Guided tours will be on sale starting Tuesday, June 20, at the Teatro Grande Ticket Office and online at vivaticket.com.

The Fondazione del Teatro Grande is pleased to announce that from Saturday, March 25 at 10.00 AM the sale of tickets for the opera Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini will be officially open to the public. The opera will debut exceptionally this summer, in July.

The opening of the Opera and Ballet Season 2023 will therefore be dedicated to a title historically very dear to the Teatro Grande: in May 1904 in Brescia, after the unexpected fiasco of the Milanese premiere, the new version – the “bresciana” one – achieved ainternational success and sanctioned the immortality of Puccini’s masterpiece.

The show will be a new staging (international co-production Teatro di OperaLombardia, Teatro del Giglio di Lucca, Estonian National Opera) in which will be proposed the second edition of the opera, that will debut on the stage of the Teatro Grande on July 20 at 8.00 pm with a repeat on July 22 at 6.00 pm and Premiere on July 17 at 5.00 pm.

The title role will played by Eleonora Buratto (after this year’s debut at the Metropolitan in the role). One of the most famous Italian conductors in the world will be conducting the orchestra: Maestro Riccardo Frizza. The opera will be directed by the talented Greek director Rodula Gaitanou, in continuation of that “pink thread” that distinguishes the three opening regias of the 2022-2024.

Tickets for the show will be available at the Teatro Grande Ticket Office and online on teatrogrande.it and vivaticket.com from Saturday 25 March. A student ticket is discounted at 50% of the full price. The Teatro Grande Box Office is open from Tuesday to Friday from 1.30pm to 7pm, Saturday from 10 am to 13 pm and from3 pm to 7 pm.
