Sharon Eyal, an acclaimed choreographer with an unmistakable signature, combines here the classical aesthetics and physicality of ballet with electronic music. After Plafona Now and the international success Soul Chain, Promise is her third creation for the tanzmainz company, a further step in a joint creative process, in this case lasting only six weeks of intensive work with seven dancers from the company. On stage, the dancers become a single body, moving, in the shadows, between closeness and desire, ecstasy and solitude, in a space where unreal images disappear as quickly as they arrived, yet remain clearly visible, like snapshots in the mind. A magic typical of dance, but here taken to the extreme, thanks to a complex interweaving of discipline and dedication, but also to a work of subtraction of possible meanings. Even more than the other works, Promise is like a dream: images follow one another on stage and leave an imprint in the spectator’s memory, like fragments of eternity.
Taking small cues from Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot from 1952, the duet Dusk by Philippe Kratz-one of the most fascinating dancers and choreographers on the contemporary scene-is a conversation between two beings who, suspended in space, wait for darkness (or rather dawn?) while all around them the presence of perpetual twilight marks the non-passing of time. Organ music by contemporary Swedish composer Anna von Hausswolff fills the air giving breath to the two bodies in dialogue, the atmosphere is as light and vibrant as it is pregnant with allusive power.
