Quartetto d’Archi di Torino | Giorno della Memoria

Event organized in collaboration with Casa della Memoria

In 1960, the Soviet government asked Shostakovich to travel to East Germany to accompany a group of filmmakers working on the film Five Days, Five Nights, for which the composer would write the music. Filming took place in Dresden, where he saw with his own eyes the consequences of Nazism and World War II: a city devastated, razed to the ground by British and American bombing supported by the Soviet Union. The experience deeply disturbed him, and he spontaneously attempted to express his emotional state through a musical composition. Dramatically bringing to life that cry of personal mourning and pain already heard in other compositions, the Quartet Op. 110 inexorably took shape, sealed with a significant dedication: “To the victims of fascism and war.” The program concludes with Steve Reich’s Different Trains, a project for string quartet and prerecorded tracks. The American minimalist composer combines his childhood memories of traveling by train across the United States from Los Angeles to New York between 1939 and 1943 to visit his separated parents with the memories of Holocaust survivors. The work starts from the observation that, as a Jew, if he had lived in Europe between the 1930s and 1940s, he would have ended up on trains different from those on which he crossed America.
