The new edition of Lezioni di Storia, the history-focused project organized by the Teatro Grande in collaboration with Editori Laterza, is dedicated to Inventions.
Can we speak of the invention of the unconscious? Or has the unconscious always been there, simply waiting to be discovered? In 1895 two Viennese physicians, Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer, in Studies on Hysteria, gave scientific life to this new construct. A few years later Freud developed it in The Interpretation of Dreams and described psychoanalysis as the third challenge to our self-centeredness: after the Copernican revolution, which taught us that we are no longer the center of the universe, and the Darwinian revolution, which placed us within the animal kingdom, the psychoanalytic revolution teaches us that we are not masters in our own house.
Vittorio Lingiardi is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and teaches Dynamic Psychology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza.”
With the participation of actress Elena Vanni.
