Lezioni di Storia | Invenzioni | Amedeo Feniello. I numeri

The new edition of Lezioni di Storia, the history-focused project organized by the Teatro Grande in collaboration with Editori Laterza, is dedicated to Inventions.

The medieval mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci lived as a child in present-day Algeria. It was there that he learned the science of Arabic numbers from a great master. Fibonacci is known for introducing the decimal system into Europe in place of Latin numerals. In his Liber abbaci the nine digits and the symbol “0” appear for the first time—a symbol that carries with it traces of very different cultures and worlds: zero, called zephirus in Latin, is an adaptation of the Arabic sifr, itself derived from the Indian term meaning “emptiness.”

Amedeo Feniello teaches Medieval History in the Department of Human Sciences at the University of L’Aquila.

With the participation of actress Elena Vanni.
