Ensemble del Teatro Grande | Brahms e Rota

On March 29, the clarinet, cello, and piano trio tackles a masterpiece from Brahms’s late period, when his friendship with a talented clarinetist awakened him from a compositional slumber and inspired him to write his last chamber music masterpieces. This is paired with a trio by a composer who, in some ways, suffered a similar fate in Italy: that of being labeled “conservative and reactionary” in music. In reality, as with Brahms, this argument makes no sense: not embracing the aesthetics of the avant-garde certainly does not mean being backward-looking, it means having other musical priorities and expressing modernity with other weapons. And Nino Rota’s weapons are of the highest caliber, including irony, which is also a great asset in music.
