CATHEDRAL
Created in October 2019 for Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, this choreography became part of the Ballet Junior de Genève’s repertoire in May 2023. Accompanied by the spiritual music of Arvo Pärt, pure as a heartbeat, Cathedral asks us to reflect on the nature of existence. About the mystery of man in the midst of the greatness of nature and the infinite universe. Marcos Morau places the dancers in an evocative atmosphere, the perfect setting for his beautifully designed choreography and inventive language of movement. One can almost feel the twelve dancers moving and clicking, moving from one staccato movement to the next. The choreographer imagines the dancers as broken toys inside in an arcade.

TENIR LE TEMPS
Created in July 2015 for the Montpellier Danse Festival and entering the Ballet Junior de Genève’s repertoire in February 2019, Tenir le temps starts from an interrogation posed by choreographer Rachid Ouramdane: “Who controls what happens in our society that runs at multiple speeds?” “For this piece, I imagined subjecting the 16 performers to a mechanism that overcomes them, made up of rhythmic actions, domino movements and chain reactions,” says Ouramdane. In this dance rush, the bodies testify to a crisis situation, in which the bond between individual and group is in constant negotiation. Together, without being in unison, in the flashes of solos and duets, the performers demonstrate a formidable drive for life. Between continuous movement, emptiness and fullness, tension and abandon, Tenir le temps is one of Rachid Ouramdane’s most danced pieces. The score by composer Jean-Baptiste Julien responds in perfect harmony to the choreographer’s writing. These two creators remind us that the art of repetition, canon and leitmotif is a founding concept in the world of dance.
