Ensemble del Teatro Grande | La memoria della musica

The concert is dedicated to Erwin Schulhoff, probably the most brilliant of the Jewish composers of the generation that suffered the terrible misfortune of the concentration camps.
Schulhoff was the true modern musician, with ears open in every direction, and this concert is a pretty clear testimony to that. Jazz, which he listened to from the records of a friend in Germany, is certainly the starting point for the Hot-Sonata, for saxophone and piano: both for the choice of one of the instruments that symbolises that music, and for the rhythmic element, which recovers many of the stylistic features of early jazz. Yet it is all filtered through the composer’s style and his careful knowledge of all the ramifications of modernism: a true kaleidoscope of sound.
The softness of the Sonata for flute and piano cannot but lead us to France, the country where the flute saw its heyday in those very years. Here, too, however, it is not a question of unfiltered drawing: it is still Schulhoff with his unmistakable style of a thousand colours and surprising harmonies.
Finally, the Concertino for flute, viola and double bass turns towards popular music, which for a Bohemian like Schulhoff is an inexhaustible mine. Especially in the two fast tempos, the folk dance, exaggerated by the use of the piccolo and double bass, becomes unrestrained and highly entertaining.
