“OPEN Il Grande accessibile” Project

OPEN is the Teatro Grande’s project dedicated to sensory disabilities. Since 2017, we have launched an important inclusion project under the coordination of Prof. Elena Di Giovanni of the University of Macerata. By setting ourselves the goal of opening the spaces of the Theater and improving the enjoyment of performances for audiences from the blind and deaf communities, the project has allowed over the years to welcome an increasing number of people and, since 2023, has expanded the cultural proposals to audiences with cognitive disabilities as well.

Once again this year, OPEN enables facilitated enjoyment of all performances of the Opera and Ballet Season thanks to innovative Mobile Connect technology from Sennheiser, a leading international sound company. Through a simple app installed free of charge on a mobile device, hearing-impaired spectators have the ability to autonomously modulate sound frequencies by tuning them according to their hearing abilities: assisted listening takes place with pinhead headphones, but the system can also connect to next-generation cochlear implants. The same system allows blind and visually impaired users to be able to watch performances accompanied by an audio description transmitted through headphones.

Multisensory itineraries are also organized during the performances with tactile tables of the sets, exploration of scenes and costumes, in-depth musicals with singers and Maestri at the piano and LIS tours inside the spaces of the Theater with access to the backstage, as well as an inclusive Dance Workshop aimed at young people and dedicated to the ballet Giselle.

Finally, in 2024 the course for inclusive guides is renewed, divided into two training days: Saturday, June 1 and Saturday, October 12. Designed for teenage girls and boys and adults up to 35 years of age from the deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired and cognitively disabled communities, the Course offers the opportunity to approach the world of Theater by delving into its historical-artistic aspects and the theme of inclusion in cultural venues.

A detailed calendar of events will be available soon.

As a reminder, all initiatives promoted under the OPEN Project are free of charge and there is a 50 percent discounted ticket for accompanying men and women attending Opera and Ballet performances.

The OPEN Project is implemented by the Fondazione del Teatro Grande in collaboration with associations, organizations and operators working with sensory disabilities in the area, both locally and nationally.
